About

The Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area is thriving. But as people flock to the Twin Cities area in search of career opportunities and urban living, a shortage of affordable housing is pricing residents out of owning homes and driving up the cost of rent.

As leaders across the country search for forward-looking solutions to tackle housing inequities in their own backyards, many are looking to Minneapolis’ 2040 plan, which makes Minneapolis the first major U.S. city to end single-family zoning, as an ambitious solution towards a future of more equitable housing access.

What are the short-term and long-term effects of this plan? If housing shortfalls aren’t remedied, what will this mean for the future economy of the surrounding region? How will the $40 million in city funds, proposed by the mayor of Minneapolis to lower the burden of housing costs, alleviate some of the housing roadblocks impacting renters? What support can the private sector provide and can Minneapolis’ ambitious 2040 plan be replicated and scaled to other areas of the country facing similar housing challenges?

The Hill will bring its signature brand of timely political reporting and insightful policy coverage to
Minneapolis, bringing together key local and national leaders, housing experts, advocacy groups and the Minneapolis community for a discussion on tackling local and national housing inequities.

ABOUT

When ReFab first sought funding in 1990, people laughed in founder Rae Birkan’s face. Who on earth was going to buy clothing made from — gasp! — used, old clothing? Why waste money on a company built on waste?

About

Starting your own business and picking the right niche in no time

Note: Building The Dream Milwaukee originally scheduled for Tuesday, April 14th will be rescheduled for a future date.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Technological innovation, the rise of the gig economy and a growing emphasis on four-year college degrees has led to a nationwide shortage of skilled labor. This lack of skills-based trade workers is not only hurting employers but also poses a significant threat to the continued health of the nation’s economy.

How are cities like Milwaukee working to address this labor shortage and what role can policymakers - across all levels of government - play in helping to prepare workers for the jobs of today and tomorrow?

In the third stop on our “Building The Dream” tour, The Hill will bring together elected officials, labor experts and employers for a series of conversations on strengthening the pipeline of skilled workers.

ABOUT

America today is markedly more diverse than at any other time in history. Sex, gender, identity, race, ethnicity - old stereotypes are fading. But barriers still exist - in society, politics, at school, in the office and the board room. Social, political and corporate barriers continue to reinforce endemic inequities.

Yet societies, organizations and firms that resist diversification make themselves vulnerable to competitors who are more nimble and adept, because of their diversity.

Corporate leaders are recognizing the dangers of having a homogenized workforce.

Civic leaders are recognizing that the complexity of a constantly changing society requires the see-around-the-corner vision of a diverse group of leaders.

The Hill will assemble stakeholders in this debate and test the proposition that without diversity, firms suffer, organizations stumble, associations of many sorts may flounder.
